What does cat food contain?

VeggieAnimals is formulated to provide all the necessary nutrients, producing a complete and balanced food with 100% plant-based ingredients. Our cat food contains the optimal amount of protein, fat, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals for our companions.

Proteins are made up of amino acids. There are 20 different amino acids, which combine to form proteins, and each protein, depending on the combination of amino acids and the structure they form, has a specific function in the body.

In cats there are 11 essential amino acids, whose presence in the food is essential so that they do not suffer from nutritional deficiencies. There are 10 amino acids which are the same as in dogs: arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. Taurine is also essential for cats.

Proteins are mainly derived from maize, peas, yeast, wheat and rice. They are extracted, concentrated and prepared so that they can be assimilated and digested.

Fats provide essential fatty acids. They also perform vital functions such as storing energy, serve as a structure for the production of hormones and other substances, and facilitate the transport and absorption of various vitamins such as fat-soluble vitamins A, D and E. Fats are also important for maintaining healthy hair and skin.

Fats also help to make the food more palatable, and are easily digestible.  

In cats arachidonic acid is an essential fatty acid, which at VeggieAnimals we add from a 100% vegetable source, although this fatty acid along with taurine are the reasons why many people claim that cats cannot be fed 100% vegetable food, we can actually obtain both from non-animal sources.

Carbohydrates provide cells with quick energy. Within carbohydrates are simpler molecules such as sugars. When sugars are put together, we find more complex carbohydrates such as starches and dietary fibres.

Sugars and starches are called digestible carbohydrates and provide energy. Fibre, while not digestible, improves the digestive health of our companions.

Despite the grain free fad and the demonisation of cereals and carbohydrates, the reality is that cats can digest and benefit from the consumption of carbohydrates, providing them with energy to give them vitality and fibre that will help their digestive system and transit.

Dietary fibres are essential for digestive health. There are soluble (fermentable) and non-soluble (non-fermentable) fibres.

Soluble fibres stimulate salivation, attract water and become gelatinous, helping the digestive contents to advance, and thanks to their bacterial fermentation they help to regulate the rhythm of stools.

Low-fermentable or insoluble fibres increase stool bulk and aid digestive transit.

Vitamins are essential for the correct functioning of the body, as they help in the assimilation of other nutrients and in the repair of the body. 

There are fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and water-soluble vitamins (all the others). Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and are not easily eliminated. While water-soluble vitamins do not pose a risk of overdose as the excess is excreted in the urine, it is still important to have an optimal intake of each of them.

In cats, vitamin B3 and vitamin A are essential, which is why at VeggieAnimals we add them and monitor their presence as closely as we do all other nutrients.

Minerals are also essential nutrients. Macro minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium should have a greater presence in the food, and in smaller quantities we find trace elements such as iron, copper, zinc, manganese, cobalt, iodine, selenium and fluoride.

Some minerals have essential functions for proper functioning, but an excess consumption of any of them can cause anything from urinary stones to neurological intoxication with serious consequences.

Is it appropriate to feed 100% plant-based food to a cat?

We would like to clarify that feeding 100% plant-based food to cats is not only an option, but also a healthy option. At VeggieAnimals the recipe is formulated according to FEDIAF guidelines, producing a high-end feed, with an optimal concentration of nutrients and allowing us to enjoy living with felines that need us without having to kill other animals to do so. 

For decades, 100% plant-based foods have been used to feed cats, and despite their many detractors, they have not yet managed to bring this type of food into the spotlight, even though they claim that it is harmful.

Is VeggieAnimals the only food that covers a cat's nutritional needs?

VeggieAnimals is a physiological food, adapted to meet the nutritional needs of healthy animals or those without specific needs. It is also suitable for cats with allergies, hair or skin problems, arthrosis, digestive problems, immune system diseases and sterilised cats, among others.

VeggieAnimals is a high-end physiological food, i.e. its nutrient content is optimal, as is the ability to digest and assimilate these nutrients.

When feeding our companions with a dry feed, the only thing we must monitor and take into account is their water intake. We must always have several containers of different sizes and materials with fresh water available and check that they drink the right amount. We can also encourage them to drink by using drinking fountains or observing how they prefer to drink so that it is always available to them.
