How to Store Dog and Cat Food

However, once the package is opened, factors like time, humidity, light, and heat can affect the food’s quality. That’s why proper storage is key to prevent spoilage, loss of aroma, or reduced nutritional value.

Keep the food in its original packaging

Our bags are made with materials that protect the food from light and moisture. Whenever possible, store the food in its original packaging, sealing it properly. This way, you also keep the expiration date and batch information handy, which can be useful in case of any issue.

Use airtight containers

Air is one of the main enemies of freshness. Once the bag is opened, contact with oxygen starts oxidizing the vegetable fats, which can cause loss of aroma and flavor. To avoid this, transfer the food (with its bag, or at least keeping the batch and expiration data) into an airtight container made of plastic, stainless steel, or glass. This protects it from moisture, air, and insects. Each time you open a new bag, clean and dry the container thoroughly before refilling it.

Store in a cool, dry place

Heat accelerates nutrient degradation, while humidity encourages mold and bacteria growth. The ideal is to store food in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, radiators, ovens, or damp spaces such as bathrooms or garages. The optimal storage temperature is between 10°C and 25°C.

Avoid unnecessary transfers

Transferring food from one container to another increases its exposure to air and contact with possibly dusty, greasy, or damp surfaces. It’s best to place the closed bag inside the container or use a clean airtight container.

Close the package properly after each use

Each time you take your pet’s daily portion, close the bag immediately with clips or sealing systems. A tight closure keeps insects away and prevents the food from absorbing odors from the environment.

Don’t mix new food with old

To ensure freshness, finish the entire bag before opening a new one. Mixing old and new food can contaminate the fresh batch or make it harder to track expiration dates.

Choose the right bag size for your pet’s consumption

Larger bags may be more economical, but it’s better to match the size to your pet’s eating habits. If it takes too long to consume, the last portions may lose freshness. Ideally, the food should be eaten within 4–6 weeks; under optimal storage, it could last up to 8 weeks, but that’s not recommended. The longer it sits, the higher the risk of oxidation, loss of flavor, and moisture damage — which can pose a health risk.

Always respect the expiration date

The expiration or “best before” date indicates how long the food maintains its properties. Avoid feeding expired food, as it may have lost nutritional quality, become less digestible, or even cause health issues.

Avoid cross-contamination

Always use clean, dry utensils to serve the food. Avoid putting your hands directly in the bag — they may be moist or carry bacteria. Use a dedicated spoon or cup for the food (and if you don’t have our measuring cup yet, ask us for one!).

Always check the appearance and smell

Before serving, take a look and smell the food. If you notice a rancid or unusual odor, mold, insects, or changes in texture, don’t feed it. This quick check can often alert you to important changes.
