What is dog food made of?

At VeggieAnimals we make a combination of cereals, pulses, vegetables and fruits, resulting in a product of excellent quality. Protein from rice and wheat is added to the main ingredients of rice, maize, peas and potatoes. Along with fruits such as apple, plum and blueberries and vegetables such as pumpkin, alfalfa, carrot, parsley, sage, thyme, liquorice, dog rose, oregano, yucca and chicory. All this makes a perfect combination of nutrients, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals essential for a correct diet.

In addition, we add seaweed extracts rich in fatty acids and vegetable extracts that provide antioxidants so important for their quality of life.

Composition of dog food.

Our companion's food should be complete and contain adequate amounts of protein, fat, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals. Too much or too little of any of these nutrients can seriously damage the health of our dogs.

Proteins are made up of amino acids. There are 20 different amino acids, which combine to form proteins. Each protein, depending on the combination of amino acids and the structure they form, has a specific function in the body.

In dogs there are 10 essential amino acids, whose presence in the food is essential so that they do not suffer nutritional deficiencies. These 10 amino acids are arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. 

Fats provide essential fatty acids. They also perform vital functions such as storing energy, serve as a framework for the production of hormones and other substances, and facilitate the transport and absorption of various vitamins such as the fat-soluble vitamins A, D and E. Fats are also important for maintaining healthy hair and skin.

Fats also help to make food more palatable, and are easily digestible.  

Carbohydrates provide quick energy to the cells. Within carbohydrates are simpler molecules such as sugars. When sugars are put together we find more complex carbohydrates such as starches and dietary fibres.

Sugars and starches are called digestible carbohydrates and provide energy. Fibres, while not digestible, improve the digestive health of our companions.

Dietary fibres are essential for digestive health. There are soluble (fermentable) and non-soluble (non-fermentable) fibres.

Soluble fibres stimulate salivation, attract water and become gelatinous, helping the digestive contents to advance, and thanks to their bacterial fermentation, they help to regulate the rhythm of stools.

Low-fermentable or insoluble fibres increase stool bulk and aid digestive transit. 

Vitamins are essential for the correct functioning of the body, as they help in the assimilation of other nutrients and in the repair of the body. 

There are fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and water-soluble vitamins (all the others). Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and are not easily eliminated. While water-soluble vitamins do not pose a risk of overdose as the excess is excreted in the urine, it is still important to have an optimal intake of each of them.

Minerals are also essential nutrients. Macro minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium should have a greater presence in the food, and in smaller quantities we find trace elements such as iron, copper, zinc, manganese, cobalt, iodine, selenium and fluorine.

Some minerals have essential functions for proper functioning, but an excess consumption of any of them can cause anything from urinary stones to neurological poisoning with serious consequences.
