VeggieAnimalsExperience - Kiwi
When VeggieAnimals was born in 2012 we did not know that this type of food, developed by specialized veterinarians, would also benefit the health of animals with certain pathologies.
Taurine is an essential amino acid that is responsible, among other things, for the normal functioning of the heart muscle. Since the 80’s, it is added to feed, to all, not only to 100% vegetables as you tend to think, since a deficiency of this amino acid can be related to heart problems.
According to the WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) the amount of taurine that must contain a dry food is 1000mg/kg of feed, or 2500mg/kg in the case of wet canned food. VeggieAnimals contains 1500mg/kg widely covering the recommendation.
If you still decide to supplement there is no problem since taurine is water soluble and the excess is eliminated through the urine.
Today we have with us a beautiful family with extensive experience, unfortunately, in this area since Kiwi suffers for years a severe heart disease: Pulmonary stenosis type A associated with severe tricuspid AV dysplasia.
His mother, Silvia, wants to share with us her story:
"In September 2011 Kiwi appeared on my way, as is. He was riding a motorcycle on a road surrounded by forest and in a bend, in the opposite direction, the hairy one appeared at full speed. Here begins our life and adventure together. This winter will be about 11 years old, 9 years ago he had an operation that involved a very high risk to his life and today is still an eternal puppy eager to play and enjoy every moment"
VeggieAnimals: How did you know that Kiwi had severe heart disease? What was his prognosis?
When we found Kiwi, he didn’t look well. He was full of parasites and he looked malnourished. The first vet to see him examined him and I detected that his heartbeat was not normal. He was very curious about what looked like a murmur in the little one, so he wanted to take an x-ray. The heart had a malformation and was larger than normal, in the state of health that had reached our arms the prognosis was that it had no chance of getting ahead. Kiwi was not going to have time for a second chance, however, he told us that if he could last a week we could value the visit with a cardiologist. I spent all my time watching him, he was the most beautiful and happy dog I had ever met. I wanted to live and play. After the first week at home, Kiwi was visited by a cardiologist and we had a diagnosis: continuous murmur, severe hypertrophy of the right ventricle, tricuspid valve failure... etc.!
VeggieAnimals: Since when does VeggieAnimals feed?
Kiwi is fed with VeggieAnimals since this feed was first marketed. It is a think that he likes very much and at the time the product was born we began to give it to him and the rest of dogs that live at home.
VeggieAnimals: Does your veterinarian know that you eat 100% vegetable food? What do you think about it?
Both his veterinarians of periodic reviews and the specialists who treat him (neurologist and cardiologist) know that their diet is 100% vegetable and it seems good.
VeggieAnimals: I imagine that Kiwi’s pathology requires periodic reviews. How are your analytics and other tests? Does he usually relapse?
Kiwi went from having reviews and analytics every 6 months to annual controls. He has not had any relapse and the little scares he has given us are due to age, although he does not believe it, is a senior dog
VeggieAnimals: Do you think that 100% vegetable food has benefited you to live with quality of life and so many years?
We are sure of it. Kiwi has never had any nutritional problems and is a dog full of vitality. In addition, it is the feed that we have also given to the rest of our dogs and they all have very good health.
