World Farm Animals Day 2023.

World Farm Animals Day is celebrated every year on 2 October. This celebration, which I wish we didn't have to "celebrate", aims to raise awareness of the extreme violence to which millions of animals around the world are subjected for human consumption. The treatment of farm animals is intolerable, extremely cruel and inhumane. Unfortunately, "animal welfare" laws in virtually every corner of the world have done little to ensure that these animals are given a dignified life and death.

The date of the celebration is no coincidence. October 2nd coincides with the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, a well-known pacifist, vegetarian and animal lover. This initiative comes from the NGO Farmed Animals Reform Movement (FARM).

What is the Farmed Animals Reform Movement?

Founded in 1976, it is a national non-profit organisation that advocates for animal rights, veganism and sustainability. For many years, it was the only national animal rights organisation fighting for farm animals and advocating to end the use of animals for food. That is why its link and strength with World Farm Animals Day is so important.

FARM, which operates out of Washington DC and New York through a network of activists, runs massive public awareness campaigns and international programmes (such as MeatOut, Vegan Earth Day, World Day for Farmed Animals and Compassionate Holidays).

World Farm Animals Day 2023 Objectives

The main objectives of this day and movement are as follows. In addition to publicly denouncing all the practices involved in each of the stages. From the birth of farm animals, through breeding, development, transport and slaughter. 

• Combat factory farming, macro-farms and all types of intensive and cruel farming.
• Encourage agricultural professionals, distributors and transporters to include REAL animal welfare practices in all processes.
• Educate the public about the kind of life these animals are subjected to.
• Raise consumer awareness, so that they demand respect for farm animals.
• Encourage users of farm products to consume them more responsibly.
• Mobilise the public by sharing on your social networks or by writing to public authorities, national political representatives and/or European and global bodies.
